I had never seen a piranha until now. Holy crap. I'm never going anywhere close to the amazon...ever. I mean, look at it, that thing could eat my leg, which is really saying something considering how much I work it out.

That thing WILL eat your leg. Groups of them have been known to eat people alive. I mean....literally chew every bit of flesh off and leave nothin but the bones. But that one, cripes it could eat a person all on it's own HAH! I have heard they wont bother people, as long as one doesn't have a cut or open sore..that is. These guys are in line with the Great White (or it might be Reef Sharks), and the Florida Alligator. Got them down here, but not Piranhas, thank god.

If you guys have seen the show river monsters you may have seen this fish covered on there. They usually don't bite you unless you are bleeding and such. I wonder if they found the fish dead or alive?

But if you have not seen the show "River Monsters" check it out. That is if you like weird fish

wow.....why are people so quick to say that its mean and would eat them...piranha are like sharks misunderstood and people are just not informed about them....the water on this planet host some of the most interesting and weird looking lifeforms...

now the one you show looks to be of the black piranha family.....

i would not have any trouble being in the water with him because they have been misunderstood and misjudged and its because of stupidism and just unwillingness to learn by the human race....

Teddy Roosevelt in 1914 went to the amazon and was shown a spectacle of mass rage and hunger...little did he know the fisherman set nets up in parts of the river and filled it full of starving piranha and sliced a cow up and dropped it in there for Roosevelt to see and in his book Through the Brazilian Wilderness he said that they are the most brutal and will devour a human if they so much as leave there hand in the water..... in 1978 the movies decided to go at there reputation and made the first piranha movie then a few years later made a few sequels one with flying piranhas...

It was more of a joke.... I can give you THOUSANDS of reasons why I wouldnt swim in the Amazon, this little fishy would be the last thing I am worried about. Plus you need to be bleeding in order to trigger them to bite. I personally think he is cool looking....very aggressive look.

Those teeth look nastier than a large cactus , and even nastier than a pit ful of razor sharp blades and arrowheads.

I own a lot of cacti. I have one very large one that has 100's of stiff and very sharp thorns (pickers I like to call them). I like cacti and know damn well you gotta have respect for them. Yep, I've bumped it quite a few times. It's worse than bumping the end of a sharpie (needle)! Now, that said, I have respect for all wildlife whether it be by land or aquaeus. But, I still would not stick my hand in a lake that has piranha swimming in it. I just don't trust it. I treasure my hand way too much to take a risk like that. Chances are, it wont bite. BUT ...yes...theres always that "But", one COULD bite for some unpredictable reason. Animals and fish have acted in bizarre ways for unknown reasons. Lions hunting wild dogs in the african wild (they normaly dont) or trying to feast on an elephant ..now that's rare. They say certain animals wont attack certain (other) animals and in many cases usually stay away from these types. But on rare occasions for strange reasons, they just decided to take a bite on something way higher in the food chain. This unpredictable behavior and constantly changing environment is what keeps me from putting my hand in a lake full of piranhas.

that looks nothing like the Pirahna we had in our aquarium in the 6th grade.

we used to bring in all kinds of insects for him to eat. He was about the size of a half dollar coin.
